A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah

This novel has swept across America and the world bringing with it a wave of insight into the lives of the children directly affected by the Sierra Leone war of the 1990's. Ishmael Beah tells the story of how, as a boy, he fled attacking rebels in his violent homeland of Sierra Leone, and by the age of thirteen, he'd been picked up by the government army and became a child soldier, capable of terrible acts. The story is haunting and allows the world to appreciate a voice, a perspective that few have ever heard.

In order to appreciate the conflict inside the novel, you may find it helpful to learn more about the war and the two opposing sides. Background on the War
